An e-mail newsletter nurturing the development and enjoyment
of English language arts at home and at school.
The Grannie Annie is not the only one encouraging
you to interview your family storykeepers. StoryCorps, an
independent non-profit project that has collected nearly 40,000
audio interviews since 2003, has instituted the first-ever
National Day of Listening (NDL), which will be held this Friday,
November 28.
Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps, explains that the goal of NDL
is to "encourage, instruct, and inspire everyday people to start
a new holiday tradition: sit down with a loved one on the day
after Thanksgiving and record a meaningful conversation to
preserve for years to come. It's a chance to give the gift of
listening, a priceless treasure that costs nothing but a little
time."
StoryCorps has provided a do-it-yourself guide and some
suggested questions to help people prepare for their interviews.
These tools might help young people plan their Grannie Annie
interview as well: http://www.nationaldayoflistening.org
National Public Radio (NPR) stations across the United States
are promoting National Day of Listening. Fran Hamilton and
Connie McIntyre, cosponsors of The Grannie Annie, are honored to
be part of this effort. They will be on St. Louis on the Air on
St. Louis's NPR affiliate, KWMU-FM (90.7), on Wednesday,
November 26, talking about saving family stories -- via
StoryCorps, National Day of Listening, and The Grannie Annie.
They plan to read some stories from Grannie Annie, Vol. 3.
The program will be broadcast live at 11:00 a.m. and rebroadcast
at 10:00 p.m. (CST) -- or you can listen live on the Internet at
http://www.kwmu.org
. The interview will later be archived on the KWMU website.
We encourage you to make this Thanksgiving season extra special
for your whole family by taking the time to get to know one of
your loved ones a little bit better -- and by saving his or her
story for future generations. Remember that stories submitted to
The Grannie Annie might be chosen for publication in an
annual anthology -- children have the chance to become published
authors. Get all of the details at
http://www.TheGrannieAnnie.org . The submission deadline is
February 14, 2009.
